In 1964, more than 700 students from around the country joined organizers and locals in Mississippi to demand rights for black voters. Fifty years later, hundreds gathered to recognize the accomplishments of Freedom Summer and to talk about ways to continue to build on the lessons of 1964. GJ COIN Intern, Cecilia Frescas, attended the celebration and gathered stories and reflection from attendees. Lucia Martinez, also a GJ COIN intern, explores Chican@ identity through a collection of local voices that share how they love their Chican@ identity and what it means to them.
