Generation Justice (GJ) is a multi-media movement that trains youth to harness the power of media and give rise to narratives based in truth, analysis and hope. GJ’s mission is to inspire youth to become media makers committed to social transformation.

Positive youth development is at the core of our approach. Through our work in the domains of racial equity, civic engagement, media literacy, academic achievement and career development, youth build the skills and agency to speak against issues of systemic and internalized oppression and shift the future of media.

Premium journalism training in radio broadcasting, video production and blogging combined with love of self and community, media/social justice, and critical thinking help to produce quality narratives that represent New Mexico.

GJ’s commitment to NM’s racial/gender equity is embodied through intentional recruitment and stellar media coverage of communities of color. Generation Justice serves as a strategically aligned career pipeline to independent, alternative, community-based, media reform/justice, and even mainstream media.

The GJ Fellows Program is a critical component of this strategically aligned pipeline. It is designed for young journalists of color with premium hands-on training in the following multimedia areas:

  • Radio Broadcasting
  • Video Productions
  • Publishing Blogs/Print Journalism

Media literacy/justice training provides a critical analysis of mainstream media looking at the stereotypes it perpetuates and the voices left out.

GJ Fellows develop the skills necessary to build a career pathway into the field of journalism and media justice. Fellows gain the media literacy skills necessary to critically interpret narratives, recognize trends, identify bias, and build analysis. Fellows spend each day of the fellowship working hands-on with all levels of multimedia production and social media strategizing to develop strong skills for employment and continued education in journalism.

The list of duties and responsibilities for Fellows includes but is not limited to:

Professional Development and Training

At the local level, fellows will be offered opportunities to learn from professionals who span the spectrum of today’s media environment in New Mexico in the following fields: radio, online/print, television, independent, public, alternative, and even mainstream media.  Fellows will create media products (blogs/articles, radio segments, video interviews, and digital stories) on civic and social justice issues.  These products will be published and distributed in the three major formats that Generation Justice focuses on: radio, online and television.

In addition, fellows will be provided further networking opportunities through innovative hands-on trainings conducted by nationally and internationally recognized journalists of color (i.e., reporting, journalism schools, writing and narrative, building portfolios and resumes for journalism careers). Opportunities to engage personally with these seasoned journalists are key methods for strengthening our fellows’ knowledge and commitment to civically engaged journalism.

Finally, through weekly work with GJ youth producers, many of them young people of color in middle and high school, our fellows will learn and exercise positive youth development practices so that they too can begin to mentor the next generation of journalists of color.

This intergenerational model allows a constant exchange of knowledge sharing and skills building. Ultimately, this ensures a steady flow of young, professionally trained people of color committed to reshaping the fields of media and journalism in more equitable ways.
