Omar Torres

Omar Torres is Latino and enjoys playing basketball, writing, and mostly listening to hip-hop. “My parents, especially my father, taught me that I need to constantly better myself. My dad grew up poor and worked at a young age in Mexico. He always says that he came here for us, the family. He helped shaped my mindset to what I plan to do with my future and that I need to work hard. A summer ago I went to work with my dad. I guess I wanted to prove to him that I am a good worker, so I did everything without him having to tell me. I worked my butt off that day. When I got home I was dead tired. Later that evening he told me, ‘today, you’ve earned the right to eat dinner.’ That’s stuck with me ever since.”
